Mechel takes first ever Shapeline system on Hot Rolling Mill into operation in Russia.

The Russian Steel operator Mechel is the first customer to install the new Integrated Multi Measurement system that has been jointly developed by Shapeline and Mesacon Messelektronik GmbH. The system, specially designed for hot rolling mills, offers position and flatness-compensated thickness profiles. In addition, it offers flatness, width, speed, length, and temperature profiles from one single system. The completed installation of the system also marks the first commercial Shapeline installation in a Hot Rolling Mill.

The environment in a hot rolling mill is very demanding. Smoke, vapor, water and heat provide challenges for both correct measurements and for the long-time survival of the sensors. The sensors of the Shapeline system is mounted on the mechanics of the Mesacon C-Frames. Air-purges, heat shields and both active and passive cooling is used to ensure low maintenance, long life and trustworthy data.

“This is a very important installation for us”, says Pär Kierkegaard, PhD, CEO of Shapeline. “It marks three important events: The first commercial system in a Hot Rolling Mill, the first integrated with the Mesacon Thickness measurement system and also the fist installation in Russia!”

Mr. Sergey Ogorodnikov, Chiеf of Advanced Development department at Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant, Mechel, says: “To see information presented with such accuracy in this very challenging environment is very useful for us. Now we can use this data to improve and make our production more efficient. With the integrated system our knowledge of our product is already in this early phase of the production chain very detailed and the effect of changes and settings are very quickly determined.”

Shapeline wins breakthrough contract from key Brazilian steel company.

The leading Brazilian steel manufacturer, Usiminas has in hard competition selected to use Shapeline systems provided locally by Thermo Fisher Scientific to provide flatness measurements for its Plate Mill in Ipatinga, Brazil.

Lower production levels caused by the current downturn of the economy are an opportunity for Usiminas to improve its capability in producing high quality and competitive steel plate. After an extensive evaluation process, the company has now selected Shapeline to provide the measurement systems required to trim and operate the process of producing steel plates for the Brazilian and international markets. The initial order is for three complete systems with the highest possible requirements on performance and accuracy. The systems will be delivered to Usiminas by their long time business partner Thermo Fisher Scientific.

“Being our first implementation in Brazil and of such large size enables us at Shapeline to move against the trend and actually expand our business and international presence”, says Shapeline CEO, Pär Kierkegaard, PhD. “We have delivered to plate mills that are in the technological frontline for a considerable time. With this order we are now established as the global leader. Shapeline systems are now in operation from Korea in the East to Brazil and the USA in the West.”
